Connect your domain to the right services

DNS records tell browsers, email systems and other services where to find the resources for your domain. Your website and email can use different providers while sharing the same domain name.

Common DNS records

  • A records connect a name to an IPv4 address
  • AAAA records connect a name to an IPv6 address
  • CNAME records point an alias to another hostname
  • MX records identify the servers that receive email
  • TXT records hold verification and email policy information
  • SRV records describe endpoints for particular services

Changing providers

Before changing nameservers, copy your current zone and check every record needed by your website, email and third-party services. Missing MX or TXT records can affect email even when the website still works.

Allow for cached records

DNS changes are not visible everywhere at once. Resolvers keep records for their time to live (TTL), and nameserver changes may take longer. Plan changes with that delay in mind and keep the previous service available while you check the result.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to transfer my domain?

Not necessarily. DNS hosting and domain registration are separate. Your registrar must allow you to use the nameservers required by your DNS service.

How quickly do changes take effect?

Timing depends on the previous TTL and cached information. Check the old settings and allow time for different resolvers to refresh.

Will changing DNS affect email?

It can. Preserve MX records and relevant TXT records, including SPF, DKIM and DMARC settings supplied by your mail provider.

What is a DNS zone?

A zone is the set of DNS records managed for a domain or part of a domain. Check the number of zones and records included in your plan.
